Tzolkin Calendar

The Maya Tzolk'in calendar is a sacred calendrical system that combines 20 glyphs called "Kines," representing days, with cycles of 13 moons to form a year or "Harmonic Loom" of 260 days. Each glyph represents a unique energy or concept, which the Maya associated with aspects of life and nature. The Maya worldview is deeply rooted in the connection between these glyphs and their environment, believing that they influenced important events and decisions.

 

Portraying the 20 glyphs in 20 works of art has been a fascinating experience for me, as it has allowed me to represent the complex and rich Maya worldview. Each artwork explores the relationship between a glyph and its meaning and how it influences everyday life and spirituality among the Maya. My work is an artistic tribute to one of the most enigmatic civilizations in history, which understood that the connection between time and life is fundamental, based on the premise that for the Maya, time is Art.
